Motorcyclist lays down Harley on I-469 as traffic slows to avoid lost rake

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A motorcyclist was hurt after a crash along Interstate 469 Friday morning.

The incident happened in the northbound lanes of the interstate, between the Interstate 69 and the Maplecrest Road interchange, around 8:15 a.m.

According to an Indiana State Police report, a rake fell off a work truck that was driving along the interstate. As the crew pulled to the side of the interstate and workers got out to retrieve it, northbound traffic “began taking evasive action, quickly braking to avoid the situation,” the report said.

In the group of motorists was 65-year-old Christine L. Ray, who had to brake her 2016 Harley Davidson motorcycle hard to avoid a rear-end collision, the report said. While braking, though, Ray lost control of the motorcycle and laid it down. She slid across the road surface and into a ditch, the report said.

Ray suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, state police said. She was taken to a local hospital and was in stable condition.

The interstate was shut down to traffic at the time, and traffic was backed up for several miles.
