TinCaps second game of season suspended by snow

The TinCaps led the Lake County Captains, 6-2, on Friday night at Classic Park, but the game was suspended after three innings due to inclement weather.

As scheduled, the series between the TinCaps and Captains (Cleveland Indians) shifts to Fort Wayne on Saturday night at 6:05 p.m. for Parkview Field’s home opener.

The two teams will complete this suspended game on Sunday. The regularly scheduled game for Sunday will now become a seven-inning game, per the rules of Minor League Baseball. As of Friday night, the start time for Sunday’s action is to be determined.

A wintry mix of snow and rain halted Friday’s game. Winds were upwards of 20 miles per hour with the wind chill below 25 degrees.

Nevertheless, Fort Wayne had picked up a lead in the top of the first. With TinCaps designated hitter Esteury Ruiz on first base after a line drive to center field, the 18-year-old right fielder Tirso Ornelas stepped to the plate and belted a 1-0 pitch over the right-field wall to give the TinCaps the lead, 2-0. The home run marked the first of the season for Fort Wayne.

The TinCaps weren’t done there. After the two-run home run, shortstop Gabriel Arias singled and stole second. First baseman Carlos Belen then came through with a double to send Arias home and advance the TinCaps’ lead to 3-0.

After a run in the bottom of the first inning from the Captains, Fort Wayne scored three more in the top of the second inning, thanks in part to some Lake County mistakes. With two outs in the inning, the Captains committed two errors, resulting in three unearned runs for the TinCaps, including an RBI double to right-center field for Arias.

Lake County responded once again in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI double from Tyler Friis, scoring Todd Isaacs from second and shrinking the TinCaps lead, 6-2.
