In front of Parkview Field’s first sell-out crowd of the season, the TinCaps topped the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers), 7-2, on Wednesday afternoon. A crowd of 6,584 watched as Fort Wayne won its second game in a row to open its homestand and took the series.
Starting pitcher Aaron Leasher (pronounced Lay-sure, rhyming with Glacier) threw six scoreless innings — a season high for a TinCaps pitcher. The left-hander struck out seven as he allowed just two singles and two walks.
Though Fort Wayne (4-9) was quiet offensively early on, the home team opened the scoring in the sixth inning. With runners at first and second base in motion, designated hitter Luis Campusano singled through the hole on the right side of the infield to give the TinCaps a 1-0 lead. Catcher Juan Fernandez then hustled to be safe at first on a fielder’s choice RBI groundout. Shortstop Gabriel Arias and center fielder Tirso Ornelas scored the runs after drawing walks agianst Great Lakes (2-8) reliever Aneurys Zabala.
Righty reliever Henry Henry followed Leasher with a scoreless seventh. Meanwhile, Zabala was wild again in the bottom of the seventh seventh and Fort Wayne tacked on five more runs to expands its lead to 7-0. Arias, Campusano, Fernandez, and third baseman Justin Lopez each provided a run-scoring single. Campusano’s brought in a pair. Over his last three games at Parkview Field, the 19-year-old is 5-for-12 with a home run and seven RBIs.
The Loons scored both of their runs in the top of the ninth.
