Softball Out Hits North Dakota, Splits Doubleheader


 The Purdue Fort Wayne softball team out-hit North Dakota in both games of a doubleheader, but the Mastodons earned a split on Sunday (April 6). The ‘Dons defeated the Fighting Hawks 7-3 in game one, before falling 6-2 in game two.
Alise HaleSydney Windlan, and Lauren Watson each had multi-hit games on the day, while nine different players collected a hit.
In game one, Windlan finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs. Hale finished the game going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Mastodons fell behind early as UND scored a run in the top of the first. The ‘Dons came back to tie it in the third on an RBI single by Hale. The Hawks again took the brief lead with a run in the top of the fourth. Purdue Fort Wayne answered back in the bottom half with an RBI double by Windlan.
The ‘Dons exploded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Lacey Wilzbacher got things started by scoring on a UND error. One out later and with the bases loaded, Windlan cleared the bases with her second double of the day to the left-center gap.
North Dakota added a run back in the sixth, but the Mastodons again had an answer as Hale doubled off the wall to score Watson.
Alyssa Malicki earned the win, tossing 5 1-3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two strikeouts. Shaina Eyre came on for the final 1 2-3, allowing two hits while striking out two.
Watson finished game two going 3-for-4 at the dish to lead the ‘Dons.
UND would again start the scoring, bringing home the first run in the fourth inning. The Mastodons would have an answer in the bottom half of the inning as Camryn Mosher singled up the middle to score Rachel Everson.
North Dakota went out in front for good as they scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the seventh. Looking the rally in the bottom of the seventh, the Mastodons loaded the bases and brought home a run when Hale drew a walk. That would be the end of the rally as UND turned a double play to end the game.
Eyre took the loss in game two, throwing 5 1-3 innings and allowing four runs. Lauren McConnell allowed two runs in the final 1 2-3 but did not allow a hit.
The two teams wrap up their series tomorrow, April 7, at 11 a.m. The game will be Purdue Fort Wayne’s annual Pink Out game to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation for Breast Cancer.
