Softball Hosts Pink Out Event, Falls to Jackrabbits

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Fort Wayne softball team celebrated its annual Pink Out game to benefit the Vera Bradley Foundation, but the Mastodons were unable to pick up the victory as they dropped a doubleheader to South Dakota State 10-3 and 5-4.
 
Jenna Balthazor led the ‘Dons at the plate going 4-for-6 with a home run, a double, and three RBIs. Lacey Wilzbacher also collected four hits in eight at-bats with two doubles and two RBIs. Maria Palmegiani and Courtney Holm each finished with two hits and an RBI.
 
In the opening game, the Mastodons were unable to contain the bats of SDSU, as the Jackrabbits scored in six of the seven innings.
 
Fort Wayne got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs, Balthazor singled through the right side of the infield. After a double by Sydney Windlan, Wilzbacher brought them both home with a single down the left field line.
 
The ‘Dons tacked on a run in the sixth. After a pair of walks, Holm scored Demitra Burns on an infield single to the shortstop.
 
Starting pitcher Shaina Eyre took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned, in 5 1-3 innings of work. Addie Benham came on for the final 1 2-3 innings, allowing two runs, one earned, on three hits while striking out two.
 
Game two saw the Jacks score a run in the top of the first and two more in the second. Fort Wayne responded with a run in the third and fourth innings. In the third, the Mastodons loaded the bases as they brought home a run on a single to left field by Palmegiani. They added a run in the fourth on an RBI double by Balthazor.
 
SDSU added a run in the fifth and sixth innings. Down three, the Mastodons cut the deficit to one in the bottom of the sixth. Holm led off the inning with a single. On the very next pitch, Balthazor delivered on her second home run of the season, a two-run shot to center.
 
Fort Wayne put the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to bring the run home.
 
Bailey Benefiel pitched a complete game for the ‘Dons, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits and two strikeouts.
 
The two teams close out their Summit League series tomorrow, April 22, at 11 a.m.
