FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Purdue University Fort Wayne's athletics teams will play as they did when they wore IPFW on their jerseys: as the Mastodons.
University officials on Monday announced that all men’s and women’s sports teams will be referred to as the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons when IPFW officially becomes Purdue Fort Wayne on July 1. A new logo showcased Monday shows a mastodon outlined in classic IPFW blue on a black-and-gold crest, a homage to Purdue University, all below "PURDUE FORT WAYNE" in gold and black.
“Our alumni, fans, student-athletes, coaches, and staff have been eagerly awaiting this moment,” says Kelley Hartley Hutton, Director of Athletics. “The new branding includes all that we had all hoped for—and so much more. We will all be so proud to see our student-athletes suited up in their new uniforms this fall.”
The new logo had already been laid at center court in the Gates Center, where Monday's announcement was held.
The university said a "gradual process'" of changing logos and branding on campus had already begun. The Mastodons Athletics website already shows the new logo and branding.
"This is an exciting day for our university, for our student-athletes, and for Mastodons around the world,” says Ronald L. Elsenbaumer, Chancellor of Purdue University Fort Wayne. “Incorporating the internationally known Purdue name prominently into our athletics branding will add prestige and recognition to an already stellar athletics program.”
It was 2016 when Indiana University and Purdue University officials voted to do away with their shared governance of IPFW and officially transition to Purdue University Fort Wayne.
