South Side freshman-to-be Olivia Smith is getting ready to head to “The Happiest Place on Earth” – but she won’t be happy unless she brings home a championship trophy.
Smith and her Sky Diggs-Smith Soldiers team won the Midwest Regional Qualifier in Westfield earlier this summer, punching their ticket to the Jr. NBA World Championships at the Wide World of Sports Complex at Disney World.
Smith, a point guard, leaves for Orlando on August 4. She was named the winner of the Midwest Regional Respect Award for displaying a positive attitude during the qualifying tournament where she averaged 10 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and 2.2 assists per game.
The Sky Diggs-Smith Soldiers are coached by Kevin Merriweather and Moe Scott. Scott is the father of former Notre Dame standout and current WNBA All-Star Skylar Diggins-Smith.
The Jr. NBA Wold Championships is a first-of-its-kind global youth tournament for the top 14U teams in the world. There are 16 teams qualified – 8 from the U.S. and 8 international teams.
