Mastodons Fall On Senior Night In Final Second


The Purdue Fort Wayne men’s basketball program honored two of the best in team history on Saturday (March 2) evening as Kason Harrell and John Konchar were honored on Senior Night. However in the end it was a last second shot by North Dakota State’s Vinnie Shahid that was the difference 69-66.

The ‘Dons were locked into the No. 3 seed no matter the outcome on Saturday and will play No. 6 South Dakota in the Summit League Tournament on Sunday (March 10) at 9:30 p.m. ET in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

The Mastodons were down by seven points with nearly a minute left on Saturday when the ‘Dons scored seven straight to knot the game at 66. The first basket in the run was a 3-pointer by Matt Holba. The ‘Dons had two blocks on the next possession setting up a Konchar basket with 23 seconds left to make it a 66-64 game. The ‘Dons called timeout to set up their defense, and it worked. North Dakota State threw away the inbounds pass. Marcus DeBerry jumped on it and worked the ball to Jarred Godfrey who was fouled. In a one-and-one situation, Godfrey made both to tie the game at 66 with 11.5 seconds left. NDSU called timeout and put it in the hands of their leading scorer Shahid. He isolated beyond the arc and raised up to connect on a 3-pointer with 0.4 left. The shot would be the game winner.

The Mastodons out-scored NDSU 33-25 in the second half to erase a 44-33 halftime deficit. The ‘Dons fell behind after NDSU finished the first half on a 15-3 run. NDSU made three 3-pointers in the stretch.

Purdue Fort Wayne finished 40.3 percent from the floor (25-of-62) while NDSU was at 37.1 percent (23-of-62).

The game featured five ties and 13 lead changes.

Konchar finished with his 46th career double-double of 17 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks. Matt Holba added 13 points and Harrell totaled 11. Jarred Godfrey finished in double-digits for the second straight game and ninth time this season.

North Dakota improves to 15-15 (9-7 Summit League). The ‘Dons finish the regular season 17-14 (9-7 Summit League).
