After eight years without it indoor football will return to Fort Wayne in March when the Indiana Blue Bombers take the field at War Memorial Coliseum.
National Gridiron League president Joe McClendon was among the speakers Thursday morning at press conference at the Coliseum. The NGL is gearing up for its first season and McClendon says the Blue Bombers will open their 2019 slate March 23 on the road. A full schedule is expected to be released by the first of the year.
The Blue Bombers will be one of 12 teams in the league and one of two in Indiana, as the Indiana Firebirds will be based out of Evansville.
Kelvin Kinney will be the head coach in Fort Wayne and the team is looking to field a roster of 28 players.
According to McClendon, the difference between former indoor teams in Fort Wayne is that the NGL owns and operates all teams, while previous leagues have franchised out teams to local ownership groups. He believes this will provide the league with more stability.
The NGL will hold its championship game August 10 in Biloxi, Mississippi.
