Konchar Nets Career-Best 38 Points and Game Winner In OT Win

Senior John Konchar scored a career-high 38 points to help the Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons erase a 15-point second half deficit and win 90-87 over North Dakota State on Sunday (Dec. 30) evening. Konchar scored 27 of his points in the second half and overtime and made the game-winning shot with 0.8 left to give the win to the Mastodons.

NDSU took a 61-46 lead with 13:55 left in the game. What followed was an 8-0 run over the next two minutes which featured four different ‘Dons with a basket. None of them were named Konchar. He did the majority of his work down the stretch. From the 5:08 mark of the second half, the Mastodons out-scored the Bison 26-16, including overtime. Konchar had 22 of those 26 points.

It was a 71-64 NDSU lead when Konchar hit a jumper at the 5:08 mark. It was the start of an 8-0 run by the ‘Dons, all by Konchar, to give the ‘Dons the lead. Included in the push was a nifty play by Konchar when he snuck in to rebound his own missed free throw and finished inside under the basket for a unique 3-point play.

Konchar made a 3-pointer with 44 seconds left to put the ‘Dons up 81-77. NDSU’s Rocky Kreuser followed with a 3-pointer to make it a one-point game. Konchar hit two free throws to get the lead back to three at 83-80. NDSU’s Vinnie Shahid followed with a 3-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime.

Konchar would go on to score six of Purdue Fort Wayne’s seven points in overtime to get the victory. His final points were the game-winner with 0.8 left on a step-back 3-pointer.

When it was all done Konchar had a career-high 38 points on 14-of-24 shooting (5-of-10 from long range). He also had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.

Dee Montgomery pitched in 16 points. Kason Harrell had 15 points.

The ‘Dons shot 55.4 percent from the floor in the game, including 70.4 percent (19-of-27) in the second half. Purdue Fort Wayne trailed 46-34 at halftime. The Mastodons held NDSU to only five field goals over the final 18 minutes of the game, including overtime. 

Purdue Fort Wayne improves to 10-7 (2-0 Summit League). North Dakota State falls to 6-9 (1-1 Summit League).

The ‘Dons are back in action on Thursday (Jan. 3) at home against defending league champion South Dakota State. Tip at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum is set for 7:30 p.m. The Purdue Fort Wayne women will play prior to the men’s game.
