Komets fall to Thunder in shootout

For the sixth time this season the Komets suffered a shootout loss, falling 3-2 to the visiting Wichita Thunder Wednesday night at War Memorial Coliseum.

The Komets picked up a point, but haven’t won at home since January 12.

The Komets trailed 1-0 after the first period before Cody Sol’s fourth goal of the season just 2:16 into the second period evened the score at 1-1. Jakob Stukel would score 12:30 into the frame to give Wichita a 2-1 lead.

In the period period Marco Roy’s 12th goal fo the season 7:12 into the frame to knot the game at 2-2 and send it into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime the teams would go to a shootout. The first two shooters would not convert for either squad, but Wichita’s third shooter, Ryan Van Stralen, would beat Zach Fucale. Reigning ECHL MVP Shawn Szydlowski would have to score to extend the shootout but he was denied by Dylan Wells, sealing a shootout win for the Thunder.

Zach Fucale stopped 25-of-27 shots in goal for Fort Wayne.

The Komets and Thunder will face each other again on Friday at the Coliseum with the puck dropping at 8 p.m.
