IPFW softball swept in doubleheader by Omaha


The Fort Wayne softball team dropped a Summit League doubleheader to Omaha 7-2 and 9-5.

Lauren Watson led the Mastodons on the day going 5-for-6 with a run scored. Jenna Balthazor went 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs and an RBI. Lacey Wilzbacher and Courtney Holm each finished with two hits in game two. Holm also drove in a pair of runs.

Fort Wayne scored first in the opening game as Morganne Denny led off the second inning with a walk. Balthazor doubled to right field, allowing Denny to score from second. Omaha answered in the top of the third with three runs. The Mavericks would add a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one more in the seventh.

The ‘Dons tacked on a run in the fifth. Balthazor led off the inning with a double down the right field line. After a UNO error, Balthazor advanced home after the throw on a groundout.

Bailey Benefiel suffered the loss, throwing a complete game, as she struck out six batters.

The second game had the ‘Dons going up early again. After Balthazor led off the second inning with a walk, one out later Holm stepped it and with a 2-2 count, connected on her first career home run, a two-run shot to left center.

Omaha tied the game with two runs in the third, before adding six runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

The Mastodons mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, the ‘Dons loaded the bases on consecutive hits by Watson, Demitra Burns and Maria Palmegiani. Watson scored on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Denny. Fort Wayne added a pair of runs on a bases loaded wild pitch and an error. That would be where the rally ended, as the final out was recorded.

Shaina Eyre started in the circle, throwing 4 1-3 innings in the loss. Addie Benham came on for the final 2 2-3 innings

The regular season comes to a close tomorrow, May 5, when the Mastodons host Omaha at 11 a.m. Prior to the game, Fort Wayne will honor its five seniors.
