Helm And Boyd Combine For 6-5 Win Over South Dakota State

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Fort Wayne needed only two pitchers on Saturday (April 28) afternoon to secure a 6-5 victory over South Dakota State in a Summit League contest. Damian Helm threw the first six innings to get the win and Cameron Boyd tossed the final three for his first career save.

The ‘Dons went up 2-0 after a pair of runs in the first inning. Brady Hettinger scored on a wild pitch and Travis Upp came around on a Zak Kellogg RBI ground out. The inning chased South Dakota State starter Tyler Olmstead who didn’t come out for the third. The ‘Dons were just as rude to SDSU reliever Brett Mogan who surrendered three runs to the ‘Dons in the third. The fame was highlighted by a two-RBI single by Dylan Wilbert. His hit scored Hettinger and Shannon Baker. Hettinger was only on second thanks to a heads up play earlier in the inning. On a ground ball off the bat of Travis Upp to second base, Hettinger avoided a tag that would have been a double play. Instead only Upp was out on the play and Hettinger moved into scoring position for Wilbert.

The 5-0 lead was chipped away by two runs for SDSU in the fifth and two more in the sixth. The ‘Dons added what would be a needed insurance run in the fifth on a single by Mike Snyder that scored Robert Young III.

SDSU scored one in the eighth, but threatened for more in the ninth. A walk and a single to start the final frame put the potential winning run on base. However Boyd induced SDSU cleanup hitter Newt Johnson to hit a one-hopper to Baker at third base. Baker, playing in for a potential bunt, fielded the ball and stepped on third for one out. He then whipped the ball to second base for a second out. Fort Wayne tried to turn what would have been a game ending triple play, but Johnson beat the throw to first. Boyd then earned a swinging strikeout by Josh Falk to end the game.

Boyd threw the final three innings. He allowed just one unearned run. He secured the win for Helm (4-6). The senior allowed four runs (three earned) in 6.0 innings. He struck out five Jackrabbits.

Olmstead took the loss for SDSU. He is 2-3.

Eight of the nine Mastodons in the lineup on Saturday either recorded a hit, RBI or run scored. Snyder and Wilbert each knocked in two runs. Hettinger had two hits and two runs scored. Kellogg also had two hits.

The ‘Dons and Jackrabbits will play the rubber game of the three-game set on Sunday. First pitch will be 1 p.m. A win for the ‘Dons would give them their second consecutive Summit League series win.

SDSU is now 11-24 (9-8 Summit League) while Fort Wayne is 10-26 (6-14 Summit League).
