Andrews settling in at North Side

Sports

Call it a familiar face in a new place as new North Side boys basketball coach Gary Andrews got his first look at the Legends Tuesday night at By Hey Arena during an open gym session.

School board approval came Monday, meaning Andrews officially replaces Shabaz Khaliq who moved on to take the Richmond job earlier this summer.

Andrews is used to the area as he led the Bishop Luers girls to three straight state titles from 1998-99 to 2000-01. He then took over the St. Francis women’s program and guided them to a national title in 2014.

Most recently, Andrews was the women’s coach at DII Roberts Wesleyan in Rochester, New York the past three seasons.

Andrews takes over a team that went 21-6 last season and is led by Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate Keion Brooks Jr.
