MARSHALL COUNTY, Ind. (WANE)  Indiana State Police are investigating a Wednesday morning multi-vehicle crash on U.S. 31 in Marshall County that killed one person.

The incident took place just before 6:30 a.m. when according to police, a silver Volkswagen driven by Robert Brown, 51, of Plymouth was going east on 12th Road when he pulled into the path of a green Saturn driven by Rodney Gross, 50, of Rochester, going north on U.S. 31.  The impact sent the Volkswagen into a ditch and left the disabled Saturn in the middle of U.S. 31 where it was struck two more times by passing vehicles before it also ended up in a ditch.

One of the vehicles that hit the Saturn, a Ford Focus driven by Dale Tafelski, 49, of Rochester, ended up in the center median.  The other vehicle that hit the Saturn was a Dodge Ram pickup pulling a horse trailer which was driven by Lawrence Carrico, 77, of Rochester.  The Ram ended up in a ditch next to the Saturn.

Gross was airlifted to a South Bend hospital for treatment while his passenger, Raymond Lewis, 56, of Rochester died in the crash.  Tafelski was taken was taken to a medical facility in Plymouth for treatment. Brown and Carrico were not injured.

Investigators don’t believe alcohol was factor in the crash.  The incident forced the closure of a stretch of U.S. 31 until 11:00 a.m.
