Girl dies after being caught in rip current in Lake Michigan

CHICAGO (AP) - A 13-year-old girl has died after being caught in a rip current in Lake Michigan while swimming near a Chicago beach.

The Chicago Tribune reports Darianne Torres of Chicago was pronounced dead Friday night.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford says Torres was pulled from the water along with another 13-year-old girl and a 43-year-old man who helped rescue the second girl.

Police say the girls were among a group of teens who'd been swimming near Loyola Beach when the rip current caught the girls. They say they began receiving calls from bystanders around 7:35 p.m.

The National Weather Service had warned beachgoers to stay out of the water Friday because of hazardous beach conditions along Lake Michigan in Chicago, Cook County and northwestern Indiana.
