FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A young child has died after being struck by a car as she rode in a bicycle trailer along a northwest Allen County roadway Sunday.
The incident happened just before 4 p.m. at Butt and Hildebrand roads.
According to an Allen County Sheriff’s Department report, a northbound Subaru Tribeca struck a trailer that was being pulled behind a bicycle, which was southbound on Butt Road. The bicycle was heading against traffic on the northbound side, the report said.
The child inside, 2-year-old Lucy Ann Hilger of Fort Wayne, was taken to a local hospital where she died of multiple blunt force injuries, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday.
The driver of the Subaru, a 17-year-old Fort Wayne boy, stopped at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement, a sheriff’s department spokesman said. He submitted to a toxicology test, which is common practice, and results are pending.
The bicyclist – a 10-year-old boy – suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
The child’s mother witnessed the crash, according to the report.
The crash happened less than 3 miles from the Hilger home.
