A New Haven woman was killed and another person was hospitalized in serious condition after a crash in northeast Allen County Friday night.

It happened just before 10 p.m. on Cuba Road near State Road 37 close to Harlan. The Allen County Sheriff’s Department said officers arrived to find a white SUV crashed into a tree, with the vehicle engulfed in flames.

Witnesses said the SUV was headed southbound on Cuba Road when it left the roadway in a curve for some reason, the sheriff’s department said. Residents in the area said they heard a large explosion.

Police used a fire extinguisher to try to put out the flames.  Witnesses pulled the driver – an adult male – from the vehicle.

A woman – 27-year-old Juliet Anne Taylor Schnebelt – was pronounced dead at the scene. The Allen County Coroner’s Office said Tuesday Schnebelt died of multiple blunt force injuries.

The other victim has not been named.

Police on scene said that speed appeared to be a factor. The crash is still under investigation.
