A woman was found dead at a Coliseum Boulevard motel midday Wednesday.
Police were called around 12:25 p.m. to the Regency Inn at 1004 W. Coliseum Blvd. on an “unknown problem.” They arrived to find a woman unresponsive somewhere at the motel.
Medics pronounced her dead at the scene, police said.
It’s not clear what happened. Police were speaking with employees and witnesses and checking surveillance cameras to glean information.
An autopsy has confirmed the woman’s identity as Janaya Michelle Boone, 38, of Fort Wayne. However the Allen County Coroner’s Office was not able to yet determine the cause and manner of death.
A witness told WANE 15 that she and another person found the body. She said she walked into a room at the motel to pick up trash and found the woman face down in a room, with blood pooled around her. She said the woman appeared to be stabbed multiple times in the chest. She said they ran out and called police.
Another person who lives in the hotel said that the dead woman was killed by her boyfriend, or husband, whose whereabouts are now unknown. She expressed concern over where the woman’s baby might be, suggesting the boyfriend, or husband, took the baby away.
The neighbor told WANE 15, “Last night she had her baby, like everybody saw her with her baby, but now the baby’s missing and the guy she’s with.. we can’t find either one of them.”
Police were not able to confirm any of this information, and said only that the cause and manner of the woman’s death, as well as her identity, will be released later by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
Police officially described the case as a “death investigation.”
The witness said residents at the hotel are weary about what happened and scared to come out of their rooms.
Martin said, “They’re scared to come out anymore because of what happened. This is supposed to be a safe place, our home, and people are scared to come out.”
