FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – An 83-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash south of downtown Fort Wayne early Friday.

One person was killed in a two-vehicle crash at Lafayette Street and Pontiac Street.

According to the Fort Wayne Police Department, a car was heading west on Pontiac Street and a truck was going north on Lafayette Street. Police investigators said the driver of the white car suffered a medical condition and ran the red light. The car and truck collided in the intersection.

The woman driving the car was taken to the hospital in serious condition. A female passenger sitting in the front seat of the car was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where she was later pronounced dead, said Officer Michael Joyner.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 83-year-old Virginia Smith of Fort Wayne. An autopsy showed Smith died of blunt force trauma from a motor vehicle crash, the office said.

Another passenger in the car was not injured. The driver of the truck also suffered minor injuries.

The intersection of Pontiac and Lafayette Streets was closed as police investigated, and traffic was being diverted onto Leith Street. Lafayette Street reopened to traffic around 10:30 a.m.
