Woman, 75, dies after being run over in downtown Fort Wayne lot

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A 75-year-old woman has died just more than two weeks after she was run over in a downtown Fort Wayne parking lot.

The Allen County Coroner's Office said Joyce Johnson of Fort Wayne died of blunt force injuries after being struck by a vehicle around 4:15 p.m. July 3 in the parking lot of the Salvation Army Family Store and Donation Center at West Jefferson Boulevard and Fairfield Avenue.

Fort Wayne Police said officers arrived and found a victim - Johnson - down, but fully alert and conscious.

Investigators believe Johnson had stepped out the front passenger seat of a car that was being driven by a female friend. The driver did not notice that Johnson had gotten out of the vehicle and was behind it, and she backed out of a parking space and ran over Johnson, police said.

Johnson was taken to a local hospital after the incident, but police said she worsened over time and eventually died.
