The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim in a shooting Sunday at a northside apartment complex.
The victim was 26-year-old Javon Burnett from Fort Wayne. Gunshot wounds were determined to be the cause of death. It has been ruled a homicide.
Burnett was found dead between two apartment buildings on the city’s north side Sunday morning.
Police were called to The Summit and Ridgewood apartments around 10 a.m.
Investigators found a Burnett between two buildings near 3922 Newport Avenue who appeared to have been shot.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
FWPD Spokesman Officer Michael Joyner said several people called 911 after hearing gunshots.
“This is a densely populated area being an apartment community, as a result investigators are hopeful that those living in this immediate area could very well have witnessed an individual running or quite possibly a vehicle that are tied to this incident,” Joyner said.
A man named James Gardner spoke to NewsChannel 15 and said he was the Burnett’s step-father. Gardner said Burnett was supposed to met the victim’s mother and him at church for Easter.
Gardner said he was on his way to church when he got a call about the shooting.
The property manager of the apartment complex sent a letter to residents Sunday afternoon. Binyaile Wilson wrote that the victim was not a resident of the complex. Wilson wrote in the letter that the apartment complex’s security company will increase patrols within the community.
The incident is still under investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call Fort Wayne police or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP.
