Van Wert sheriff strikes deal to house female prison transfers

Several female prisoners could be moved from Belmont County, Ohio to Van Wert after the sheriffs of both counties struck a deal.

According to WANE 15’s sister newsroom, the Belmont County jail was built to hold 24 female prisoners. The number was last reported at 61.

Belmont County Sheriff Dave Lucas told WTRF several female prisoners are set to be moved to Van Wert county at a cost of $45 per day, paid from Belmont to Van Wert.

Van Wert County Sheriff Tom Riggenbach confirmed to WANE 15 News that a housing contract was worked out between the counties. He did not have specifics about when prisoners would be moved or how many could be headed for the Van Wert Correctional Facility.
