Steady morning snow impacts road conditions ahead of freezing rain

Local News

The Fort Wayne area got off to another snowy start Wednesday morning.

Snow began falling just before 4 a.m. and picked up speed from there.

Steady showers through the early morning hours quickly covered roads in a layer of snow.

Road conditions continued to deteriorate as the morning went on, but it wasn’t for a lack of trying.

There were several crashes and slide-offs across the area Wednesday morning, including one with serious injuries at Stellhorn and Reed Road.

City road crews spent the entire night pretreating streets with brine and salt to reduce slick spots around Fort Wayne.

Likewise, INDOT dispatched around 140 trucks to northeast Indiana starting at midnight to prepare roads for the coming winter weather.

Road conditions are expected to continue getting worse as the morning goes on and freezing rain moves into the area. That will mix with the snow and leave an icy layer on top of everything before things warm up later in the day.

Allen, Blackford, Jay, Kosciusko, and Wells counties issued Travel Advisories for their citizens. Adams County elevated its status to a Travel Watch.

County commissioners ask drivers to be extra careful on the roads this morning.

You should also expect delays and allow for enough time to get where you’re going.
