A southwest Fort Wayne hotel was evacuated Sunday after fire and smoke were found on the 5th floor.
Firefighters from several departments were called around 4:50 p.m. to Homewood Suites, 8621 West Jefferson Boulevard.
Fire crews found and extinguished fire in a 5th floor room. Aboite Township Fire Department Chief Gale Stelzer said when crews arrived they found smoke throughout the floor. They located heavy fire inside a room.
The entire six-story building was evacuated. No one was hurt.
Stelzer said a coffee pot or some type of pot on a stove may have started the fire. Investigators are still working to determine what happened.
Stelzer said crews worked to get the hotel back to normal so guests could return to their rooms. It’s not clear how many people were staying at the hotel at the time of the fire. Dozens of people were outside the hotel while firefighters were on scene.
Southwest Fire and the Fort Wayne Fire Department were called to assist but the fire was out about 10 to 15 minutes after it was first called in.
A damage estimate was not immediately available.
The six-story hotel was built in 2010 and opened in 2011. At the time of construction it was estimated to have around 80 rooms.
