A Fort Wayne man has been sentenced for opening fire on two people outside a Fort Wayne bar last August.

Aarron W. Suggs was sentenced Wednesday in Allen Superior Court to 56 years in prison for Attempted Murder and Aggravated Battery related to a shooting The Rock Tavern near Taylor Street and Broadway just after 1:30 a.m. Aug. 24.

Police were called to the bar after getting reports of gunshots at the bar. The first officers on scene arrested Suggs, then 29, in a nearby parking lot.

When other officers arrived in the area, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

Police found one man across the street at the BP gas station. They found the other behind the bar near an alley. Investigators believe both men were shot near the back of the bar before running for safety.

Medics responded shortly after police and took both men to the hospital. They were initially listed in serious condition, but doctors later determined they were in critical condition once they arrived at the hospital.

The victims were identified by police later as 44-year-old Christopher M. Pogue and 35-year-old Jacob R. Jeffrey.

According to police, there was video surveillance footage inside the bar and at several area businesses that detectives used to piece together the details of what happened.

That video was shown in court Wednesday. It showed Suggs shooting the victims. Suggs could be seen leaving and coming back three times before the shooting was over.

Authorities found more than 20 shell casings at the scene. One victim was shot seven times and the other, twice.

“You didn’t just go in and shoot these folks,” Allen Superior Court Judge Fran Gull told Suggs. “You went back three times. That’s outrageous.”

Suggs apologized to the victims and their families, and explained he had too much to drink that night. Suggs told the court he suffers from drug and alcohol addition.

“I shouldn’t have been out that late especially after drinking that much alcohol,” Suggs said. He then looked at one of the victims and said, “Sorry for being a piece of s— if that’s what you view me as.”
