A Fort Wayne Community Schools bus carrying elementary students went off the side of Wallen Road Tuesday at around 8 a.m. and came within inches of hitting a utility pole. The bus involved is number 28.
The crash took place on Wallen Road west of Coldwater Road. Wallen had been completely closed but is now back open.
A FWCS spokesperson told WANE 15 that there were 22 students on the bus and they were heading to Washington Center Elementary. Krista Stockman didn’t believe any of the students had to go to the hospital, however a WANE 15 videographer on the scene witnessed a couple students being treated in an ambulance. Stockman has since found out that the driver and one student were taken to a hospital to be checked out.
It’s also not known what caused the bus to leave the road about a hundred yards from where it stopped. A concrete curb would have made it difficult for the driver to steer the bus back on the road.
Another bus arrived on the scene to pick up the majority of students who were not injured.
Stockman did not provide any information about the bus driver other than that she is a veteran driver.
