FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - Students were safely evacuated after a school bus caught fire on Fort Wayne's northwest side Thursday afternoon.
A picture sent to WANE-TV through our Report-It! feature showed Northwest Allen County Schools bus No. 49 on fire. Dispatchers said the incident happened around 4 p.m. in the 12000 block of Wandering Way, in the Lakes of Carroll Creek subdivision off Carroll and Bethel roads.
Dispatchers said 40 students were on board the bus and no one was hurt.
Ady Jackson, a seventh grader at Carroll Middle School, was one of them. Jackson told NewsChannel 15 that the bus was approaching its first stop when a student noticed smoke.
"One of the kids yelled, 'There's smoke everywhere," and the bus driver told us all to get off because there was fire," said Jackson.
It's not clear yet what caused the fire. Northwest Allen County Schools district spokesperson Lizette Downey told NewsChannel 15 that the district's buses were just inspected the week before school started.
Downey called the incident a "random occurrence."
Downey said bus drivers are trained to evacuate students in the event of a fire or other emergency and in this case, the training paid off.
Students who were aboard the bus were either picked up by their parents or took another bus home, Downey said.
