Red Cross blood donors are Positively Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne, Ind. - "I was bleeding to death, at risk of a heart attack and the only treatment they could give me was blood," said Erin McDonald. Blood donations from the American Red Cross saved her life. "By the time I got into the emergency room, my blood pressure had dropped to 70 over 34. They immediately started a transfusion for me."

In 2012 this long time Red Cross volunteer and blood donor had to have a blood transfusion because she was hemorrhaging. "It was amazing because I was already connected with the Red Cross so when they hung that first unit I looked over and saw it said voluntary blood donation for the American Red Cross, I really just burst into tears. I'm so grateful. I am A-positive which luckily is the most common blood type. Dennis is A-positive and we like to joke that maybe he's part of the mix that kept me alive."

Dennis, is Dennis Holp. Like Erin, he too is a long time Red Cross volunteer. "Sure it's nice to think that I helped her out," he said.   He's been donating blood and platelets since 1994. Holp doesn't know if his blood really saved Erin's life but he does know it has saved others. "It's something that people need and I think we all know someone who has either needed blood or has had cancer and needed the platelets that we donate," said Holp. "I had a brother that passed away from cancer five years ago and it kind of reinforced my commitment."

While donating blood or platelets is fairly simple, it takes more than just sitting here and rolling up your sleeve. Before you do this, there are certain criteria you must meet. "You get a little mini physical every time you come in to give," said American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana Executive Director Katherine MacAulay. "Typically a 16 year old with parental permission can become a blood donor and you can donate as long as you want. The weight limit changes according to the type of donation depending on whether it's a whole blood donation, or plasma or apheresis."

"January is the perfect time to donate because we're coming off a critical need month so we can start to beef our supplies back up. One blood donation gets divided into three units and goes to save three different individuals," said MacAulay.

"It had always been an important passion for me to be a blood donor but I had no idea that I would ever have my life saved by complete strangers," said McDonald. "It's so important that people donate regularly and consistently to make sure that blood supplies never go below our emergency levels because it really is the difference between life and death."

The Red Cross encourages eligible donors to resolve to give blood or platelets regularly. Here is a list of donation sites throughout Northeast Indiana through January 31, 2019.
