Purdue Fort Wayne star given own day in city

Local News

The leading scorer in Purdue Fort Wayne basketball history now has his own day.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry on Thursday proclaimed March 28, 2019, to be John Konchar Day in the city.

Konchar is a senior at Purdue Fort Wayne and the first player in NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball history to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 500 assists, and 200 steals in a career.

Henry said Konchar is the kind of student athlete who’s a great role model for children.

“Honestly, I can’t imagine anything that’s happened in my career by coming in as a 160-pound kid five years ago, I would’ve never guessed any of this,” said Konchar. “This is a really great honor and honestly it’s pretty awesome.”

Konchar earned his degree in informational technology.

ESPN projects he’ll be drafted in the second round of the NBA draft.
