A shooting at a home just south of downtown Fort Wayne was likely the result of a drug deal gone bad, police said.
Fort Wayne Police were called just before 11:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Cottage Ave., across from South Wayne Elementary School two blocks east of Broadway. Dispatchers would only tell WANE 15 that police responded on a reported shooting.
At the scene, police said a man was shot in his side. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition, officers said.
One officer told WANE 15 that the shooting appeared to be a “drug deal gone bad.” The victim’s car was missing and police were investigating.
Police said there were no witnesses to the incident. No other information could be provided.
South Wayne Elementary is closed for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
