Police looking for person of interest in deadly shooting

Fort Wayne police have asked for the public’s help to identify a person of interest in a mid-summer homicide.

A person captured in a surveillance photograph has been named a person of interest by detectives investigating the July 29, 2018, shooting death of Michael Carter at American Legion Post 148 at 705 E. Lewis St. The image is of poor quality, but appears to show a heavy set man with a light colored shirt and light colored cap.

It’s not clear where the surveillance image was captured.

Fort Wayne police were called to the American Legion post around 1:50 a.m. that July morning on report of a shooting. Officers arrived to find two people had been shot.

Both people were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Carter would later die.

A witness told WANE 15 that Carter was shot in the eye, before being shot multiple times.

While at the America Legion, police were told a third person had arrived at a hospital. That person also appeared to have been shot and the victim was reported to be in critical condition, police said.

Police told WANE 15 that a fight took place inside the post which led to the shooting outside in the parking lot.

Authorities had yet to provide any suspect information or updates in the shootings until Monday’s photograph was released.

Police asked that anyone who might recognize the individual in the image contact Crime Stoppers at 436-7867 (436-STOP).
