Police: Bad drug deal in Kroger lot leaves 1 dead, 1 hurt

Local News

Two people have been shot in the West State Plaza parking lot, one fatally, another critically, after police said a drug deal went awry.

Police and medics were called around 5:53 p.m. to the lot of the Kroger in West State Plaza near St. Marys Avenue.

When they arrived they found one man in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. He was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but was downgraded to critical at the hospital.

Police were later informed that a second shooting victim was driven to a nearby hospital. When officers arrived, the hospital confirmed the victim was associated with the shooting at West State Plaza and was pronounced dead.

The Allen County Coroner’s Office has identified the victim as Brinden R. Hall Fletcher, 25, of Fort Wayne and he died from gunshot wounds.

Investigators initially said an altercation took place at the lot before the shooting occurred. On Tuesday, WANE 15 learned that a drug deal had gone bad and shots rang out between the two.

Police were not looking for any other suspects.

Police had an area from the gas station to the parking lot cordoned off with crime scene tape. At least four vehicles appeared to be inside the tape.

The incident is still under investigation.
