An investigation is underway after a toddler died at a hospital Thursday morning, and a man has been jailed as a person of interest in the case.

Albion police received a 911 call around 7:20 a.m. when an unresponsive child was taken to a hospital. The 2-year-old would died soon later.

Albion Town Marshal Scott Cole said an abuse and neglect investigation was launched.

Cole said two Railroad Street homes were searched in connection with the investigation, including the home of 42-year-old Trevor L. Wert. Authorities were also investigating a home in the 300 block West Railroad Street in Albion, where a vehicle was towed and impounded by police.

Cole said the child did not live at the residence. The identity of the child has not been released.

Cole said in a news conference Friday that Wert has been named a person of interest in the investigation. Wert was booked into the Noble County Jail on a 72-hour hold until the Noble County prosecutor can file charges.

The investigation is ongoing.

The case is being investigated by the Albion Town Marshal’s Office, with assistance from the Noble County Sheriff’s Department, the Noble County Prosecutor’s Office, Indiana State Police, Noble County Sexual Assault Response Team and Noble County Coroner’s Office, according to Noble County Prosecuting Attorney Eric Blackman.
