Person found dead inside car in St Marys River identified

Local News

The body of a man was pulled from a car that crashed into the St. Marys River near Rudisill and Broadway in Fort Wayne early Sunday morning according to Fort Wayne police.

The Allen County Coroner identified the man as Brian Coburn, 36, of South Whitley, Indiana.  Police and other emergency responders were called to the area shortly before 3:30 a.m. on a report that a vehicle had possibly gone into the river.

The car was equipped with OnStar, the onboard safety and security system available on certain General Motors vehicles.

An OnStar operator in contact with authorities indicated initially that the car was either in the river or alongside the river.  A short time later the operator advised that the car was in the river and heading towards the Bluffton Road Bridge.

Officers located the submerged car and when Fort Wayne Fire Department crews arrived rafts and divers were deployed into the river.

The divers found the car and located a Coburn inside. They attached a cable and the car was pulled from the river just south of the Bluffton Road Bridge. Coburn was pronounced dead at the scene.  His death was ruled an accidental drowning by the Allen County Coroner’s Office. No one else was in the car.

Fatal Team Investgators were called to the scene along with DNR officers to help with the investigation.
