Person arrested after hit-and-run crash injures motorcyclist

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A person is in police custody after leaving the scene of a crash that critically hurt a motorcyclist Sunday evening.

According to Fort Wayne police, shortly before 9 p.m. a white SUV was westbound on West Jefferson Boulevard when the driver, 30-year old Christopher Karami, attempted to turn onto Reckeweg Road and instead collided with a motorcycle.

FWPD Spokesman Officer Jason Anthony said the vehicle did not stop. Witnesses provided police with a good description of the vehicle.  Anthony said a short time later officers located the vehicle and driver not far from the crash on Reckeweg Drive.

The motorcycle driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

Anthony said investigators believe alcohol was a factor in the crash.

Karami has been charged with one felony count of “Operating While Intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury,” one felony county of “Leaving the Scene of a serious bodily injury accident,” Three felony counts of “Neglect of a Dependent,” and one misdemeanor count of “Operating While Intoxicated Endangerment.”

Westbound West Jefferson Boulevard was closed at Reckeweg Road while police investigated.
