Pedestrian critical after hit and pinned underneath car

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - One woman is in critical condition after being hit by a car at the intersection of St. Joe Road and Canterbury Boulevard Friday evening.

Police arrived at the scene around 6:11p.m. and found a woman pinned underneath a Pontiac Vibe. The Fort Wayne Fire Department freed the woman from underneath the car and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Investigators say the driver was stopped at the light to leave Canterbury Green Apartments looking to turn south onto St. Joe Rd. When the light turned green, the car began to turn at the same time the woman was walking east across St. Joe Rd. The driver did not see the woman and hit her, dragging her several feet before coming to a stop.

The driver of the car was not hurt. No other vehicles were involved.

Police say neither speed nor, alcohol appear to be a factor in the crash.

The southbound lanes of St. Joe Rd. remain closed while investigators process the scene. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call Fort Wayne Police.
