Police are investigating the death of a pedestrian who was hit by a car in south Fort Wayne Sunday night.

Around 8 p.m., officers were notified of a man down in the street in the 200 Block of Pettit Avenue, right off of South Calhoun Street in front of Southgate Plaza.

While on the way to the scene, police were told a car had hit a pedestrian.

Emergency responders found a man lying in the street unresponsive. They attempted CPR and soon pronounced the man dead at the scene.

He was identified Monday as 65-year-old RIchard M. Papazian of Fort Wayne. The Allen County Coroner’s Office said Papazian died of blunt force injuries and his death was ruled an accident.

Investigators talked to the driver who hit the man and witnesses to find out what happened.

The driver of the vehicle had one passenger with them. No other serious injuries were reported.

It’s not clear if any charges were, or will be, filed.

Pettit was closed from the east entrance of the Southgate Plaza to the west entrance during the investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
