WANE 15 is again proud to partner with the University of Saint Francis to announce the school’s Pay it Forward scholarship. There are three finalists for the 2019-2020 academic year. Margaret “Maggie” Kelly is one of them.
The Bishop Dwenger senior spent a couple years volunteering at the Franciscan Center Thrift store in Fort Wayne. Proceeds support the Franciscan Center’s programs to feed and cloth those in need.
“We have to do 10 hours at a time,” said Kelly. “It’s called list hours. So we have to do them all in the same place just so we can form a relationship with the people that we’re serving. I did it my freshman and sophomore years for probably a total of 20 hours.”
Thrift Store Assistant Manager Tricia Miller thinks Kelly is a great finalist for the Pay it Forward scholarship. “She helped out with our cashiers, helped out customers,” said Miller. “She’s been really great and it’s been a joy to have her here.”
“At Bishop Dwenger we’re required to have 10 service hours per semester,” said Kelly. “There’s also an award called the Mother Teresa award where if you do 15 hours above the requirements you get an award. I’ve received it all three years and that’s what I hope to do again this year.”
“I’ve been helping at the Community Harvest Food bank and there I’ve filled senior sacks which are bags filled with 20 pounds of non-perishable items. Those go to seniors and that helps them get through the week a little better,” said Kelly.
“I’m thinking about getting a business degree and hopefully just either opening up my own salon or something like that. I just think it’s awesome to give back to the community and just help however I can.”
USF will award one full tuition scholarship which includes tuition and fees and two half tuition scholarships which includes the same, for the 2019-2020 academic year. Pay It Forward Scholarships are renewable up to four years.
The application for the Pay It Forward Scholarship is now closed. Applications were accepted through November 1, 2018. The winner of the full scholarship will be announced Thursday, December 13, 2018.
