WANE 15 is again proud to partner with the University of Saint Francis to announce the school’s Pay it Forward scholarship. There are three finalists for the 2019-2020 academic year. Alex Yoder is one of them.
Yoder is one of the blazers on the court for Eastside High School basketball in Butler. On the night WANE 15 caught up with him, he was hooping it up by helping youngsters at Eastside’s basketball camp who dream of one day sinking a few for the team.
“It’s great. It’s a good feeling for me,” said Yoder. “I can just remember back when I was their age and I had the older kids helping me out with all these different practices and stuff. I just want to give back to them like those older kids did to me. I want them to have the same experience I did.”
“This is my seventh year at Eastside,” said Blazers basketball coach Ryan Abbott. “When I took over I remember Alex was just a rug rag in our program. He’s turned himself into quite a leader.”
Abbott is excited his former rug rat is a finalist for the Pay it Forward scholarship. “Alex is a tremendous person,” said Abbott. “He’s impacted our community and our entire basketball program.”
Giving it up on the court is just one way the Spencerville resident gives back. “I’m very involved in my church so I go to youth groups,” said Yoder. “We did several missions trips throughout my junior high and high school career. I’ve also been with our high school basketball team. Every year we get the opportunity to go to Butler United Methodist church and we serve at the food bank which is a great opportunity for all of us.”
“I’ve always thought about pursuing a career in the medical field and I heard great things about the medical program at St. Francis. Paying it forward is really important to me. It’s not just about paying it forward with money or other things like that. It’s about paying it forward with your time. Time is really important so I just give all my time to the people that I can. I just want to help in every way possible.”
USF will award one full tuition scholarship which includes tuition and fees and two half tuition scholarships which include the same, for the 2019-2020 academic year. Pay It Forward Scholarships are renewable up to four years.
The application for the Pay It Forward Scholarship is now closed. Applications were accepted through November 1, 2018. The winner of the full scholarship will be announced Thursday, December 13, 2018.
