FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A man riding a bicycle was pronounced dead at the scene of a crash on the Lima Road overpass above I-69 Monday evening. The crash is causing traffic delays.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., officers were dispatched to Lima Road above I-69 on reports of a crash with injuries, according to the activity log.
Officers on the scene said that a bicyclist was on the far right northbound lane and attempted to cross towards the median. He stopped in front of a moving vehicle where he was hit and flipped over the median. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
When the man flew over the median, the oncoming vehicle stopped to attempt to not hit the man, officers said. That vehicle was rear ended by a different vehicle that fled the scene.
Police believe that the cyclist was wearing all dark clothing and that the lack of lights at the time of the accident may have contributed to the accident.
Traffic is down to one lane in both directions of Lima Road from Ley Road to Washington Center.
The victim has not being identified.
