Neighbors describe explosions in deadly St. Joe house fire

Neighbors described hearing explosions, like oxygen tanks blowing up, after a deadly house fire in St. Joe Thursday night.

A woman was killed and two firefighters were hurt in the incident.. 

Four departments were called to the 200 block of Widney Street around 5:00 p.m. Thursday.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff, two people were home at the time. One person was able to escape, but the woman was later found dead. 

“I know she was a really nice lady,” neighbor Kearra Blondeel said.

“Burns are hellaciously painful,” Marty Anspach added. “I just hope she didn’t suffer.”

Two firefighters were injured and taken to the hospital. One sufferd minor injuries and was released. The other, burned, was taken to a hospital in Indianapolis. 

A neighbor said one explosion knocked the firefighters off their feet and to the ground.

Fire officials say they were able to get the fire under control after over an hour. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
