Murder and child molesting charges have been filed against an Albion man jailed last week in the death of a 2-year-old he had been babysitting.
Noble County Prosecutor Eric Blackman filed the charges against 42-year-old Trevor L. Wert Monday, days after 2-year-old Railee Ewing died after being taken to a Fort Wayne hospital around 7:20 a.m. Nov. 1 unresponsive.
Doctors said the toddler had signs of possible abuse, including “significant” bruising.
An autopsy found Railee died of multiple blunt force traumatic injuries. There were also injuries to her private areas consistent with penetration by an object, Blackman said.
According to Blackman, Wert had been babysitting the child on the night of Oct. 31 – when authorities believe the injuries happened.
During an interview with police, Wert reportedly admitted to beating young Railee because he was angry with her, Blackman said.
“Investigators and medical personnel have remarked that this was one of the most brutal abuse cases they had seen,” Blackman said.
