FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — A new mobile vaccination site opens today on Fort Wayne’s southeast side.
The Allen County Department of Health said Monday the mobile vaccination site will open at McMillen Park at 3901 Abbott St. Tuesday through Sunday. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Both the 2-shot Pfizer and the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be offered at this clinic.
State and local health officials kicked off today’s mobile vaccine clinic with a press conference at Memorial Coliseum. Allen County Health Commissioner Dr. Matthew Sutter is pleased with the county’s progress on vaccinations, but knows there is still a long way to go.
“The pandemic is not over,” Dr. Sutter said. “A majority of our citizens are still not vaccinated.”
This week’s mobile clinic will work towards Allen County’s goal of vaccinating communities in south central and southeast Fort Wayne. It will also attempt to reach communities that are interested in getting the vaccine, but have not done so for a variety of reasons.
Community leaders from the Hispanic and Burmese communities also spoke up Tuesday, urging others to get the vaccine if they have not already done so. Indiana Department of Health Chief of Staff Shane Hatchett hopes their message will resonate better with minority communities in Allen County.
“We’re most successful when the communities come out together and spread the message, which is why I’m really excited for the number of folks we had this morning, the representation we had from different communities,” Hatchett said.
