FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) — An arrest has been made in the shooting death of a man at an apartment building early Sunday morning.

Dakota Waudby, 19, faces a preliminary charge of murder in the killing of Renako Sadiki Kenyatta Thomas, 34, of Fort Wayne at an apartment in the 7900 block of Decatur Road.

Just after 1 a.m., Fort Wayne Police responded to the apartment complex after several witnesses reported a shooting there.

Police and medics arrived to found Thomas down in a hallway of an apartment, lifeless. He had several gunshot wounds, and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy found Thomas died of a gunshot wound to the chest and his death was ruled a homicide, the Allen County Coroner’s Office said.

According to a probable cause affidavit released Monday, a resident of the apartment told investigators that there had been four people at her apartment, including Waudby and Thomas. Everyone except Waudby was at the scene when police arrived.

Police spoke with Waudby’s girlfriend, who said Waudby had begun to get upset because he wanted to leave the apartment. She said Waudby eventually got up and said he was just going to walk home, but Thomas punched him in the face.

That’s when Waudby “started shooting,” the affidavit said.

In an interview with police, Waudby said Thomas had yelled at his girlfriend and he told him to stop talking to her like that. Thomas charged at him and punched him, Waudby told police.

At that point, Waudby said he “panicked.” Waudby said he “blacked out” and could not recall how many times he fired his gun, or even where his gun was, according to the affidavit.

He said he could only remember driving home and being pulled over by police, according to the affidavit.

There are two apartment buildings in the 7900 block of Old Decatur Road.
