The Lakeland School Board has decided to table the recommendation to close two elementary schools due to declining enrollment.
District wide, enrollment has fallen from 2,174 to 1,843 over the last decade.
With schools more than half empty, the district said its cash reserves were being drained to maintain all five school buildings.
The recommendation would close both Lima Brighton and Wolcott Mills Elementary schools.
Instead of making a decision Monday, the board created a committe made up of both board members and community members to explore other proposals. They are expected to have a decision by March 25th.
