FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) Kroger will open a new store on Fort Wayne’s northeast side.
Kroger will build a 100,000 square foot store at Dupont and Tonkel roads, east of Parkview Regional Medical Center, company spokesman Eric Halvorson confirmed Wednesday. Kroger already operates a Kroger Marketplace store just a few miles west, at Dupont and Coldwater roads.
Halvorson said the growth in Fort Wayne’s north side demands a new store.
“The growth in that part of Fort Wayne is likely to produce a greater demand for Kroger service and value,” Halvorson said. “We want to be ready for it.”
The store will not be a Marketplace store, which offers home goods and clothing in addition to groceries. At $26 million, though, Chris Gomez, Fort Wayne’s District Manager, said the new store is “a significant investment.”
“It’s a brand new facility. It’s not a replacement facility, so if you look at it from that context, there’s gonna be 300 new jobs added to this particular market,” Gomez said.
Meanwhile, several neighbors who live near the future site say they are excited about the addition.
“This is just gonna be nice where we don’t have to drive so far down just to get what we need,” Scott Harter said.
But Harter did voice some concerns as well. He said he hopes the close proximity to another store does not lead to another vacant building like Scotts.
Gomez addressed the concern, saying that the closeness of the stores is actually a positive thing. He said it’s a sign of the positive growth in the area and that this new location will be well-served.
A construction date on the development has not been established.
A representative at INDOT said the department hasn’t received any permits from Kroger yet. She also said she is unsure of the impact construction could have on traffic in the area.
Cincinnati-based Kroger operates nine stores in Fort Wayne. The chain has invested more than $100 million into the Fort Wayne area stores in the last eight years.
