Kraken CycleBoats launches downtown with pedal-powered fun

Local News

Nearly 2 years ago, Jeff Rhoades helped start up Kraken CycleBoats following a pedal pub experience with friends in Nashville. He took the concept and brought it on the water to places like Tampa, Jacksonville, and Jupiter, Florida.

Rhoades recently heard more about the momentum behind riverfront development in Fort Wayne and knew it was time to launch this venture in the Midwest. He was born and raised in Leo and wanted to bring something back to the community near his hometown.

“Fort Wayne has such an asset here. And I think this is not just a piece but I think this will be a major piece in getting eyes on the river,” Rhoades said.

The Kraken CycleBoat affectionately named “Hoosier Daddy” departed from the docks at Headwaters Park West on Independence Day for its inaugural voyage. The boat will cruise multiple times each day from Headwaters Park for 2-hour tours.

Cruises are BYOB (bring your own beverage) and can accommodate up to 16 total people, which is perfect for events like birthday parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, team-building activities, family reunions, and more. The boat is powered by 10 pedaling stations on the boat, along with a small engine, which can prove useful on windy days. Music is also available during each cruise and can be streamed off of passengers phones via Bluetooth.

Prices range from $33/person for individuals or $25/person for groups of 15 people ($435 total). Passengers are also encouraged to bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and closed-toed shoes for pedaling.

A rider on the inaugural cruise, Leslie Snare, said, “I think anything that gets people on the rivers is gonna be awesome for our city, so I would 100% recommend this.”
