40-year-old Michael Carter was shot to death at an American Legion post on Fort Wayne’s east side early Sunday in a shooting that also left two others hurt.

Fort Wayne police were called to the American Legion Post 148 located at 705 E. Lewis around 1:50 a.m. on report of a shooting.  Officers arrived to find two people had been shot.

Both people were taken to a hospital in critical condition, where Michael Carter later died.

An autopsy showed Carter died of gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.

A witness told NewsChannel 15 that Carter was shot in the eye, before being shot multiple times.

While at the America Legion, police were told a third person had arrived at a hospital. That person also appeared to have been shot and the victim was reported to be in critical condition, police said.

Police couldn’t confirm if the third victim had previously been at the American Legion.

A large crowd of people gathered outside the American Legion after the shootings, with many people yelling long after police arrived.

Police told NewsChannel 15 that a fight took place inside the post which led to the shooting outside in the parking lot. Authorities did not provide any suspect information.

An investigation is underway at this time.

Police are asking if you have any information to call the Fort Wayne Police Department or Crime Stoppers at (260)-436-STOP.
