State Rep. Phil GiaQuinta, (D) Fort Wayne, has been selected as the House Democratic leader for Indiana.
Indiana Democrats made the decision during a caucus Wednesday. The group also chose a caucus chair and floor leader for the 2019-2020 legislative sessions. Mara Candelaria Reardon, (D) Munster, will serve as caucus chair and Cherrish Pryor, (D) Indianapolis, was picked for floor leader.
“I am honored that my colleagues in the House Democratic Caucus have chosen me to be their leader,” GiaQuinta said in a news release. “I am pleased that our caucus was able to pick up seats in Tuesday’s election, but I feel that we can do more to ensure that all Hoosiers are given a voice in their state government. We have a growing number of diverse voices in the House Democratic Caucus, and I intend to use their skills to provide a vision of how government can work for the people of Indiana. We will begin to articulate that vision in the 2019 legislative session.”
GiaQuinta was born and raised in south-central Fort Wayne and has served as a state representative since 2006.
Service runs in the family for GiaQuinta. His father, Ben GiaQuinta, also served as a State Representative.
Besides serving in state government, GiaQuinta is a customer account manager for Fort Wayne City Utilities. A big accomplishment for him was starting Fort Wayne’s successful 3-1-1 call center to help create a one-stop shop for city services.
GiaQuinta is also a trustee of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum and serves on the board at Brightpoint.
Previously, GiaQuinta was on several organization boards including Community Harvest Food Bank, Blue Jacket, and Eagles Nest Youth Center. He also served as an elected member of the Wayne Township Advisory Board.
GiaQuinta’s time as Indiana House Democratic leader will begin in 2019.
